Gynecomastia Surgery

Feel confident in your skin again

The enlargement of breasts in men (gynecomastia) can happen at any age and can significantly impact your self-confidence. Many patients often say they don’t feel comfortable without wearing a shirt. Unfortunately, the condition is far more common than you might think. Approximately 50 percent of men in the United States experience some form of gynecomastia at some point in their lives. Gynecomastia surgery removes excess fat and breast tissue from the chest and tightens loose skin. As a result, you will have a more defined pectoral region with a visibly more contoured and masculine-looking chest.

Dr. Douglas Hendricks, a triple board-certified Newport Beach plastic surgeon with more than 30 years of surgical experience, is especially noted for his excellent skill and compassionate bedside manner. Dr. Hendricks’ expertise in the field of body contouring makes him perfectly suited to perform gynecomastia surgery. In fact, he has recently earned the title of Number One Liposuction Surgeon in LA & Orange County.

What Is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery may also be referred to as male breast treatment or male breast reduction and describes a procedure that removes excess breast tissue from the chest, contouring the pectoral region and tightening and enhancing the pectoral muscles to increase definition and produce a more masculine-looking chest contour.

Are Gynecomastia Surgery Results Permanent?

While technically, surgical fat removal or fat extraction through liposuction is considered a permanent treatment because they permanently remove fat cells in the treatment area, they do not remove 100% of all fat cells, nor do they remove fat cells outside of the treatment area. This means that it is not impossible for your body to gain weight again in the future, or for fatty deposits to accumulate in your chest once again.

In order to maintain optimal results from the gynecomastia surgery or male breast reduction procedure, you should also take up a healthy and active lifestyle and incorporate healthy foods and regular exercise into your daily routine. If you’re ready to learn more about gynecomastia surgery in Newport Beach and how you can achieve a tighter, more masculine chest contour, contact Pacifica Cosmetic Surgery Center today and schedule a consultation with Dr. Hendricks.

Who Should Consider Gynecomastia Surgery?

Men and boys who feel self-conscious when wearing close-fitting shirts or those who limit their participation in physical activity due to embarrassment or discomfort caused by enlarged breast tissue may be excellent candidates for the procedure assuming they are in overall good health.

In some cases, you may have to quit smoking or suspend the use of certain medications in order to prepare for the gynecomastia surgery procedure. If you are currently in a weight-loss program, it may be wise to postpone your gynecomastia surgery until you are closer to your ideal weight, as future weight fluctuations may affect the outcome of your procedure.

How Is Gynecomastia Surgery Performed?

Depending on what causes your gynecomastia, Dr. Hendricks will develop a specific surgery plan for you. For example, liposuction may be sufficient for cases caused by excess fatty tissue. However, if glandular breast tissue or excess skin needs to be removed, an excision technique might be a better option for you.

During gynecomastia surgery, the overall procedure includes the following:
  • 1. The surgeon makes an incision around the nipple through which fat and/or glandular tissue is extracted from the breasts. In some cases, excess skin may be removed during this procedure as well. Typically the gynecomastia procedure takes about an hour and a half to two hours and is performed under general anesthesia.
  • 2. In cases where gynecomastia is caused primarily by the accumulation of excess fatty tissue, liposuction alone may be a suitable treatment option. A variety of liposuction techniques may be used, but all are performed using a cannula, which is a very thin hollow tube inserted into the treatment area through tiny incisions.
  • 3. The surgeon skillfully guides and positions the cannula to break down fatty deposits in the treatment area and extract the fat by means of a gentle vacuum suction mechanism. Using a laser, Dr. Hendricks can usually break up the gland so that it can be removed with liposuction. At the same time the laser underneath the skin aids to tighten and shrink the skin making surgical removal of skin much less likely.
Many patients react well to skin tightening with the Renuvion J-Plasma device, which tightens the skin from beneath using heat. However, if there is too much excess skin left over, Dr. Hendricks will surgically remove the skin, resulting in a better aesthetic shape

Recovery Time From Gynecomastia Surgery?

Immediately after liposuction Newport Beach patients will have their chest wrapped in compression dressings and the treatment site may feel sore and swollen for several days. Most patients feel ready to resume work and regular daily activities after about a week following surgery, but it may take several weeks before you can gradually begin to introduce strenuous exercise.

Does Gynecomastia Surgery Leave Scars?

The scars resulting from gynecomastia surgery procedures are usually small and inconspicuous, particularly if the procedure is performed using only liposuction techniques, which require only tiny incisions. Even if you do require gynecomastia surgery, the incisions leave very thin scars that are well camouflaged around the edges of the areola and within the natural creases of the skin. Over time these hairline scars will fade and become barely visible.
