What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is an opportunity to change the shape and size of your breasts. Medically referred to as "augmentation mammaplasty" (and more commonly, a "boob job"), breast augmentation is a catch-all term for multiple corrective procedures to solve issues with the breasts, from the cosmetic to the restorative.

Asymmetry, lack of volume, and unhappiness with size are just a few of the issues Dr. Hendricks can correct through this breast surgery. Dr. Hendricks is board-certified in three different types of surgery, including plastic surgery. He uses these multidisciplinary surgical skills to create incredible results while minimizing post-op pain and recovery time.

Who Can Get A Breast Augmentation?

Dr. Hendricks offers this transformative procedure to women from all walks of life. Whether it's size, asymmetry, or signs of aging, most of us have at least one thing about our chests that we would like to change. Dr. Hendricks and his team are here to make sure you have all the options available to you to tackle the issues between you and your ideal shape, particularly with regards to your safety.

In general, any woman who is in good health is a candidate for breast augmentation. Pregnant women or women who have just given birth may want to wait until they are through with breastfeeding, as that part of raising children will alter the size and shape of their breasts.

As part of your consultation for Breast Augmentation Newport Beach plastic surgeon, Dr. Hendricks, will review your medical history and go over any potential issues that may impact your ability to have breast augmentation. Your health is our top priority.

Breast Implants: What Types of Implants Are Available?

At Pacifica Cosmetic Surgery Center, Dr. Hendricks offers a wide range of implant options to help his patients look and feel their best. These options include:

Saline Implants

The saline breast implant is a round implant made up of a silicone shell that is filled with saline (sterilized saltwater). The implants can be inserted into the breast tissue pocket empty and then filled once they are in the body. This means that saline implants typically require a smaller incision than their many other options, resulting in smaller scars and less recovery time.

Saline implants are also generally less expensive than other breast implants and can be requested starting at age 18, as opposed to age 22 for silicone implants.

Silicone Implants

Traditional silicone breast implants consist of a round silicone shell filled with silicone gel and inserted into the breast tissue pocket pre-filled to the size determined by you and Dr. Hendricks. The silicone gel mimics the feel of human fat, offering a more natural feel to the breasts, and some women say they prefer it to the feel of saline inside the body.

Saline implants have undergone rigorous testing in the past few decades to ensure safety after they were pulled from the markets in the 1990s due to safety concerns. While the threat of rupture is still there, today's silicone implants are incredibly resilient, and as long as they are routinely checked, they should last just as long as any other implant (most implants require replacement every 10 to 15 years). However, due to the risks associated with silicone implants in the past, the FDA has ruled that patients must be at least 22 years old to request silicone implants.

Shaped Silicone Implants

Silicone implants have undergone a dramatic reinvention since their early years, not just in terms of safety but also shape. Today's silicone implants can be shaped to mimic the slope of natural breasts, which has earned them the nickname "teardrop implants" and "gummy bear implants." In the hands of a trained breast implant specialist like Dr. Hendricks, tear-drop implants can be positioned in such a way where they create a beautiful, full bust that maintains the "natural" look.

While shaped silicone implants create a bold, beautiful look when they are in position, they are not immune to gravity's pull, and (unlike round implants) have the potential to rotate out of position after surgery. Because of that, many shaped silicone implants are also textured on the outside, which allows them to stick to the tissue of the breast pocket (think Velcro). This prevents unsightly rotations. You may hear some shaped silicone implants referred to as "textured" implants for this reason.

Gummy Bear Implants

Imagine biting into a gummy bear. The thick, gummy gelatin inside turned out to be the inspiration for the name of gummy bear implants. Like their namesake, gummy bear implants are filled with a less viscous gel than traditional silicone implants. Because of this, gummy bear implants feel incredibly natural and are more resistant to leakage in the off chance of a rupture.

However, because the gel is less likely to seep out of the implant in the event of a rupture, it is very important to get gummy implants checked just like any other silicone implant, as these "silent" ruptures are harder to notice.

Fat Transfer

Sometimes the best "implant" isn't an implant at all! Dr. Hendricks can achieve amazing breast augmentation results without the use of implants using a process called fat transfer. With fat transfer (or fat transfer breast augmentation), qualified patients can have fat removed from another part of their body (butt, belly, thighs, and hips are common donor locations) via liposuction and inserted into the breasts to increase volume naturally.

While the increase may not be as pronounced as what can be achieved through implants, the results are natural and beautiful. Also, because the surgery is less invasive, fat transfer patients tend to have faster recovery times than other breast augmentation surgeries.

Dr. Hendricks will review each of these options with you during your consultation, explain the risks and benefits of each one, and answer any questions you may have. As you collaborate, the path to your ideal form will begin to take shape. This is why we recommend a consultation with Dr. Hendricks as the first step in the breast augmentation process.

Your Breast Augmentation Surgery

When you arrive on the day of your surgery, Dr. Hendricks will meet with you one more time before you undergo your procedure to prep you and make sure you are comfortable. Most breast augmentation is done under general anesthesia, and Pacifica Cosmetic Surgery Center works with only the most highly trained, board-certified anesthesiologists to safely and gently put you to sleep.

Your procedure will vary depending on the type of implants you selected, but in most surgeries, Dr. Hendricks will make a small incision at the spot you two have agreed upon. He will then insert the implant (and fill it in the case of saline implants). If you have elected to have a breast lift as part of your augmentation procedure, that will be done as well at this time. Once the procedure is complete, Dr. Hendricks will close the incision with sutures that will dissolve in the skin over time and not require removal.

Most breast augmentation surgeries are outpatient procedures, meaning you will not need to spend the night in the hospital following your surgery. However, you will need to arrange for transportation before your surgery if your surgery requires general anesthesia. For safety reasons, patients are not allowed to drive themselves home following general anesthesia.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

You will experience soreness following your breast augmentation surgery. This usually lasts for a few days, depending on the type of surgery you selected. Augmentations beneath the muscle generally have a longer recovery time than those above, and fat transfer breast augmentations usually require less recovery time. As part of your planning process, Dr. Hendricks will provide you with a more detailed timeline to help you figure out how much downtime you'll need to budget. Some women wind up taking off a week from work or more to focus on their recovery.

Regarding exercise after breast augmentation, Dr. Hendricks recommends light walking at first, followed by more rigorous exercise as healing subsides, usually at least 6 weeks after surgery. You also will need to wait a few days for your incisions to close before swimming or taking a bath to reduce the risk of infection.

Following your surgery, Dr. Hendricks will provide you with aftercare instructions. Patients who follow these instructions generally have shorter recovery times and fewer complications.
