Sometimes a healthy diet and regular abdominal workouts can do little to eliminate excess fat and loose, sagging skin of the abdomen. Pregnancy and weight loss can also create loose, sagging skin. If you are bothered by these problems, tummy tuck (also called abdominoplasty) may be a good choice for you.

Tummy tuck surgery is designed to firm and smooth the abdomen. This procedure removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and may also be used to tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. The result is a flatter, tighter tummy.

Generally, a horizontal incision is placed just above the pubic area. The length of the incision depends largely on the amount of skin to be removed. The more loose skin that needs to be removed, the longer the incision will be. Dr. Hendricks keeps the incision within swimsuit lines when possible. Underlying muscles may be tightened by pulling them together and stitching them in place. Excess skin from the lower abdomen is trimmed away. Skin that contains stretch marks may be removed as well; however, it may not be possible to remove all stretch marks.

The "mini" abdominoplasty may benefit you if you are dissatisfied with the appearance of the abdominal area below the navel. A mini-abdominoplasty uses a shorter incision. However, mini-abdominoplasty will not correct loose skin above the navel.

Many people find that their firmer, flatter abdomen boosts their confidence and makes them feel more comfortable in clothing. As the months pass, your incision line will continue to fade. Many patients view the permanent scar as a small tradeoff for their firmer, sleeker appearance.
