Orange County triple board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Douglas Hendricks, developed the concept of a comprehensive facelift to create the most natural, beautiful results for patients seeking lasting facial rejuvenation. At his office, Pacifica Cosmetic Surgery Center in Newport Beach, this technique is discussed in detail when men and women inquire about turning back the hands of time due to facial aging, wrinkles, sagging, droopy jowls, and other facial cosmetic concerns.
- Comprehensive Treatment Plans
Many people know they want to improve something about their face, but many times they can't identify what they want done. In most cases, it is usually more than one area that has aged or detracts from an otherwise attractive and balanced facial appearance. This is where the artistry and experience of Dr. Hendricks comes into play. A comprehensive vertical facelift (CVF) is a unique plan based on your needs and goals that may be surgical, nonsurgical, or a combination of both that will not only create a more youthful appearance, but also create facial harmony so all of the facial characteristics blend.
- Types of Treatment Options To Consider
The corrections could include a subtle outer brow lift, cheek lift, lower eyelid correction, upper blepharoplasty, or blepharoplasty revision, plus the removal of the puffy fat pads at the inner corners of the eyes. Correction may also necessitate the latest vertical facelift techniques, MACS lifting, neck muscle band suturing, fat-pad correction, skin tightening, and laser treatments for wrinkles and excess fat.
Using a blend of cosmetic treatments, men and women not only can reduce and diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but correct surface imperfections. The skin can appear tighter, lifted, softer, and younger.
“Dr. Hendricks is amazing! From the consultation to the surgery and then the after care he doesn't miss a thing. His attention to detail is what makes his practice surpass and shine above the rest. He has made me look 15 years younger and all the complements, they just keep coming and the best thing is they just can't seem to figure out what it is, some think it's my hair cut other want to know what make up I am using while other think it's my foundation…… My new look is so natural yet impressive. I am so happy I chose him. His "down to earth" personality makes him so easy to talk to and puts you at such ease you'll feel comfortable with your decision when you are ready to make that decision to choose your cosmetic surgeon. You will not regret it. No regrets….I have no regrets….. :-)”– J.S. / Yelp / Jul 08, 2015

Benefits of CVF@headingTag>
The comprehensive vertical facelift with Orange County cosmetic surgeon Dr. Hendricks is the best approach to full facial rejuvenation for several reasons:
- A comprehensive facelift corrects all parts of your face at the same time. If only one part of your face is corrected, it could look really odd for that part to look 20 years younger than the rest of your face. We just don’t age that way and the result does not look natural. Yet most of the face-lifting that occurs by surgeons trained in the United States is designed to loosen and pull the lower third of the face slightly upward but mostly backward, at an angle of about 30 degrees. This "30 degree-pullback” as Dr. Hendricks calls it, stretches the tissue unnaturally over the facial bones in an odd direction mainly with the purpose of better hiding the scars. However this makes the face look thinner in the wrong areas and can even distort the corners of the mouth. This also leaves the entire upper 2/3 of the remaining upper face untreated, possibly still aged in appearance, and therefore out of balance with the lower third. This is why many people who have undergone this type of facelift are easy to identify in a crowd. The appearance is quite unnatural and sometimes even disturbing.
- It is physically impossible to tighten one part of the face without pulling or pushing on other parts of the face. You simply can’t properly lift the face without tightening the neck, and you can't do a neck lift without tightening the face (an exception would be an isolated cheek lift on an ideal patient).
- It is economical. Returning to have additional areas corrected after an initial procedure in a single area resulted in an imbalance of the face is more expensive than having every area of concern corrected at one setting. Many times patients that try shortcuts by doing less end up paying more in the end to have everything done that is needed to rejuvenate with balance and completely natural results.
- Dr. Hendricks will use his almost 25 years of experience in perfecting this procedure to give you the best results. Dr. Hendricks, in his professional opinion, can make the judgment calls needed to improve areas that should be improved but at the same time leave areas alone that don't need rejuvenation.
To get the best results during a facelift, Dr. Hendricks uses multiple tools as well as the most modern, scientifically-proven techniques to not only reverse the signs of aging, but also to allow the corrections to blend with all of the other facial features to produce a truly natural appearance. Dr. Hendricks' professional mantra is “plastic surgery should whisper.” Some of the facelift techniques that Dr. Hendricks may use include:
Skin Only Facelift@headingTag>
The skin only facelift has been in practice since the early 1900s. Known as a cutaneous facelift, this technique is less invasive because it addresses the skin only. The result of this surgery is a bit subtler than some of the newer muscle tightening procedures, however it also offers a lower risk and recovery period for the patient.
Traditional Facelift (SMAS)@headingTag>
The SMAS facelift is considered the gold standard for facelifts. This surgery, while more complicated, produces results that are more dramatic and longer lasting. The technique involves manipulating a group of muscles beneath the skin known as the superficial musculo-aponeurotic system (SMAS). This section of muscle controls facial expression. An incision is made along the hairline from the temple to just behind the earlobe. The skin is then separated and lifted. The underlying muscles and tissue are tightened and secured so they maintain their new position.
Deep Plane Lift@headingTag>
The deep plane lift goes a step further than the traditional approach. It is better suited for those with severe sagging and drooping. In addition to the SMAS layer being adjusted, a deeper section, known as the deep plane, is also treated. While this procedure offers certain advantages over a traditional facelift, surgeons must be skilled and act with caution so facial nerves are not damaged during the surgical process.
A mini facelift is geared towards patients who want some of the benefits of a facelift, while at the same time minimizing the cost and invasive nature of the surgery. Some procedures that are considered “mini” include the “Quicklift” or “Lifestyle Lift”. Patients who wish to maximize the outcome of their surgery, resulting in the most dramatic results, will most likely need to turn to having a full facelift in order to meet these aesthetic goals.
In general, a comprehensive facelift will take between 6 and 8 hours to perform and typically costs between $18,000 to $20,000, which includes the costs of anesthesia, operating room, supplies, and surgical time for Dr. Hendricks. This surgery is considered an outpatient procedure, but some patients may be required to stay overnight in the hospital. After surgery, patients will be bruised and swollen and the face and neck will feel tight. This will gradually improve within a few days. It is common for patients to feel anxious about how their face will appear. Patients need to understand it can take several full months for the final results to appear.

BOTOX, injectable fillers, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels are examples of some nonsurgical procedures that can assist in smoothing out wrinkles, improving fine lines, and adding facial volume. These procedures also help to even out the skin tone. However, these are treatments that will only affect the skin’s surface. Patients with loose skin, drooping jowls, or a sagging neck will need to consider surgery if they want these features improved.
Will I Look Fake?@headingTag>
Comprehensive does not mean aggressive. It simply means that the full facelift provides a blended, harmonious result with the parts of your facial features that need rejuvenation, while addressing all of the clues that suggest aging in the face and neck. In this way, nothing is left out and nothing looks half done. With a comprehensive vertical facelift, you won't have to worry about needing any other areas of your face treated because all of the problem areas are dealt with in one comprehensive procedure. There is no reason to worry that in a year it won’t blend with the other parts of your face, because all of the issues have been corrected. And most importantly, there is no reason to shop for what you think you need one piece at a time. A comprehensive facelift by Dr. Hendricks puts it all together for you so that the result will be natural and attractive.
Facelift surgery does require an incision. However, in almost all cases, these scars are well hidden as they fall just along the hairline and around the ears in the natural folds of the scalp. In most cases, the scars should be barely visible to the naked eye.
The common age range for patients who undergo a facelift is between 50-70. It is safe to say most patients will look 5-10 years younger following a facelift procedure. Younger patients (40-50 years old) generally have stronger skin elasticity so their results may last longer than those of someone older. However, older patients may have results that appear more dramatic and, for them, this can be very worthwhile. Patients should think of a facelift as a process to turn back the aging clock. You will still age, but you will appear a few years younger
